Quick Facts

The globus pallidus medial segment (aka globus pallidus internal segment) is a subcortical area of the brain. It is the inner, light gray portion of the lentiform nucleus and is a major part of the basal ganglia. The globus pallidus is divided into internal and external parts, which are separated by the medial medullary lamina. This segment may be further divided by the accessory medullary lamina. These subcortical areas communicate with the subthalamus. The internal segment sends the major inhibitory output from the basal ganglia to the thalamus and also a few projections to the midbrain to assist in postural control.
