Read moreQuick Facts
Origin: Superficial fibular nerve (L4-S1).
Course: Passes medially and superficially over the dorsal aspect of the foot.
Branches: Dorsal digital nerves of the foot.
Supply: Sensory innervation to the medial side of the great toe, and to the adjacent aspects of the second and third toes.
Related parts of the anatomy
Origin
After the superficial fibular nerve pierces the deep fascia of the leg, it divides into the medial and intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerves.
Course
The medial dorsal cutaneous nerve travels distally over the anterior aspect of the ankle, superficial to the extensor retinaculum. It travels medially over the dorsal surface of the foot.
Branches
The medial dorsal cutaneous nerve gives rise to dorsal digital nerves of the foot.
Supplied Structures
The medial dorsal cutaneous nerve provides sensory innervation to the medial side of the great toe and to the adjacent aspects of the second and third toes.
