Description
The nerves of the ankle and foot are derived from branches of the sciatic nerve.
—The tibial nerve gives rise to the medial and lateral plantar nerves of the foot, which serves primarily motor innervation to the flexor muscles and sensory innervation to the plantar aspect of the foot.
—The common fibular nerve gives rise to the deep fibular and superficial fibular nerves, which serve primarily motor innervation the extensor musculature and sensory innervation to the dorsum of the foot, respectively.
—The femoral nerve gives rise to the saphenous nerve, which provides sensory innervation to the medial ankle and side of the foot.
—The common fibular and tibial nerves give rise to the sural nerve, which serves the lateral aspect of the heel and midfoot.
