Description
The nerves of the arm can be divided into superficial and deep innervation. Superficial innervation comprises the following nerves:
—upper lateral cutaneous nerve of arm (C5, C6), which innervates skin of the lower lateral half of the arm;
—lower lateral cutaneous nerve of arm (C5, C6), which innervates skin of the lower half of the lateral side of the arm;
—intercostobrachial nerve (T2), which innervates skin of upper medial arm in the axillary floor;
—medial cutaneous nerve of arm (T1, T2), which innervates the skin of the medial and posterior aspects of the arm;
—posterior cutaneous nerve of arm (C5), which innervates skin of the back of the arm from the insertion of the deltoid to the olecranon process.
Deep innervation of the arm comprises the following nerves:
—radial nerve, which innervates the three (lateral, medial and long) heads of the triceps muscle;
—musculocutaneous nerve, which innervates all three flexor muscles of the arm.
The ulnar and median nerves do not innervate any muscles of the arm and continue to the forearm.
