Description
The posterior rami of the lumbar nerves are the posterior branches of the first to fifth lumbar nerves. They are one of two terminal branches of the lumbar nerves, the other being the anterior ramus. Each posterior ramus, after branching out from the lumbar nerve, courses through the intertransverse ligament and muscle, to bifurcate into a medial and lateral branch. These branches provide motor and sensory innervation to the muscles and skin of the back, respectively.
