Description

The spinal (dorsal root) ganglia of the five lumbar nerves are sensory ganglia. They are located at the proximal ends of the posterior roots of the lumbar nerves.

They each contain the cell bodies of afferent nerve fibers, which themselves convey either somatic sensory signals (such as touch, temperature, and pain) or visceral sensory signals (primarily pain) from the body to the central nervous system.

Afferent neurons of the spinal ganglia are derived from the neural crest and are primarily pseudounipolar. Their axons carry information from sense receptors in the periphery and terminate in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord.
