Structure and/or Key Feature(s)
During embryological development, mesodermal epithelium lines the urogenital ridges and gives rise to the primary sex cords. In males, the primary sex cords differentiate into the seminiferous tubules, straight tubules and rete testis. The rete ovarii is a structure formed from the primary sex cords in the female and is the equivalent structure to the rete testis in the male. In the ovary, the hilum is where nerves and blood vessels enter the ovary and the rete ovarii are evident as small blind tubules in the ovarian medulla.
