Quick Facts
The tunica albuginea is the layer of dense, white, connective tissue beneath the surface epithelium of the ovary (Dorland, 2011).
Structure and/or Key Feature(s)
The tunica albuginea is a dense connective tissue capsule that sits beneath the germinal epithelium of the ovary. Deeper to this, the ovary can be partitioned into an outer cortex and an inner medulla. The stroma of the ovary consists of a connective tissue which is highly cellular. Its fibroblasts are large fusiform cells (Ross and Pawlina, 2006; Mescher, 2013).
Anatomical Relations
The tunica albuginea is deep to the germinal epithelium of the ovary.
