Description

The ala (wing) of ilium is the superiorly located, thin, fan-shaped part of the bone. It is one of the two parts of the ilium, the other being the body of ilium, and consists of the iliac crest, four iliac spines, auricular surface, and iliac tuberosity. It provides attachment sites for muscles of the abdominal, thigh and gluteal regions.

Overall, the ilium consists of:

—three surfaces; gluteal, sacropelvic, and iliac fossa;

—three borders; anterior, posterior, and medial.
