Description

The base is the expanded proximal end of the distal phalanx of great toe (hallux or first toe). It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains an articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the proximal phalanx of great toe, forming the interphalangeal joint of the great toe.

The base of distal phalanx of great toe provides insertion sites for the flexor hallucis longus and extensor hallucis longus muscles. It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and plantar ligaments of the interphalangeal joint of the great toe.
