Description

The base is the expanded proximal end of the distal phalanx of little (fifth) toe. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains an articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the middle phalanx of little toe, forming the distal interphalangeal joint of the little toe.

The base of distal phalanx of little toe provides insertion sites for the flexor digitorum longus and extensor digitorum longus muscles. It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and plantar ligaments for the distal interphalangeal joint of the little toe.
