Description

The base is the expanded proximal end of the distal phalanx of the middle finger. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains an articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the middle phalanx of the middle finger, forming the distal interphalangeal joint of the middle finger.

The base of the distal phalanx of the middle finger provides insertion sites for the flexor digitorum profundus and extensor digitorum muscles. It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and palmar ligaments of the distal interphalangeal joint of the middle finger.
