Description

The base is the expanded proximal end of the distal phalanx of second toe. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains an articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the middle phalanx of second toe, forming the distal interphalangeal joint of the second toe.

The base of distal phalanx of second toe provides insertion sites for the flexor digitorum longus and extensor digitorum longus muscles. It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and plantar ligaments of the distal interphalangeal joint of the second toe.
