Description
The base is the expanded proximal end of the distal phalanx of thumb. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains an articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the proximal phalanx of thumb, forming the interphalangeal joint of the thumb.
The base of the distal phalanx of thumb provides insertion sites for the flexor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis longus muscles. It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and palmar ligaments of the interphalangeal joint of the thumb.
