Description
The base of fifth metacarpal bone is the expanded, proximal end of the bone. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains the:
—proximal articular facet of fifth metacarpal bone;
—capitate articular facet of fifth metacarpal bone;
—fourth metacarpal articular facet of fifth metacarpal bone.
The base of fifth metacarpal bone provides an insertion site for the extensor carpi ulnaris muscle, and attachment sites for the:
—palmar metacarpal ligaments;
—dorsal metacarpal ligaments;
—palmar carpometacarpal ligaments;
—dorsal carpometacarpal ligaments;
—pisometacarpal ligament;
—ulnar collateral ligament of wrist joint.
