Description

The base of fifth metatarsal bone is the expanded, cube-like, proximal end of the bone. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains a proximal articular facet, fourth metatarsal articular facet and a tuberosity.

The base of fifth metatarsal bone provides an origin site for the flexor digiti minimi brevis muscle of foot and insertion sites for the fibularis brevis and tertius muscles. It also provides attachment sites for the dorsal and plantar metatarsal ligaments and the dorsal and plantar tarsometatarsal ligaments.
