Description

The base of fourth metatarsal bone is the expanded, cube-like, proximal end of the bone. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains the:

—proximal articular facet;

—lateral cuneiform articular facet;

—third metatarsal articular facet;

—fifth metatarsal articular facet.

The base of fourth metatarsal bone provides an origin site for the oblique head of adductor hallucis muscle and an insertion site for the tibialis posterior muscle. It also provides attachment sites for the dorsal and plantar metatarsal ligaments and the dorsal and plantar tarsometatarsal ligaments.
