Description

The base is the expanded proximal end of the middle phalanx of little (fifth) toe. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains a proximal articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the proximal phalanx of little toe, forming the proximal interphalangeal joint of the little toe.

The base of middle phalanx of little toe provides an insertion site for the extensor digitorum longus muscle. It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and plantar ligaments of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the little toe.
