The base is the expanded proximal end of the proximal phalanx of great toe (hallux or first toe). It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains a proximal articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the first metatarsal bone, forming the interphalangeal joint of the great toe.

The base of proximal phalanx of great toe provides insertion sites for the:

—abductor hallucis muscle;

—flexor hallucis brevis muscle;

—extensor hallucis brevis muscle;

—adductor hallucis muscle.

It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and plantar ligaments of the first metatarsophalangeal joint.
