Description

The base is the expanded proximal end of the proximal phalanx of little (fifth) toe. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains a proximal articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the fifth metatarsal bone, forming the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint.

The base of proximal phalanx of little toe provides an insertion site for the abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi brevis, fourth lumbrical and third plantar interosseous muscles of the foot. It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and plantar ligaments of the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint.
