Description

The base is the expanded proximal end of the proximal phalanx of second toe. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains a proximal articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the second metatarsal bone, forming the second metatarsophalangeal joint.

The base of proximal phalanx of second toe provides an insertion site for the first lumbrical and first and second dorsal interossei muscles of the foot. It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and plantar ligaments of the second metatarsophalangeal joint.
