Read moreDescription
The base is the expanded proximal end of the proximal phalanx of third toe. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains a proximal articular facet, which articulates with the distal articular facet of the third metatarsal bone, forming the third metatarsophalangeal joint.
The base of proximal phalanx of third toe provides an insertion site for the second lumbrical and third dorsal and first plantar interossei muscles of the foot. It also provides attachment sites for the collateral and plantar ligaments of the third metatarsophalangeal joint.
