Description

The base of third metatarsal bone is the expanded, cube-like, proximal end of the bone. It is the proximal continuation of its body and contains the:

—proximal articular facet;

—second metatarsal articular facet;

—fourth metatarsal articular facet.

The base of third metatarsal bone provides an origin site for the oblique head of adductor hallucis muscle and an insertion site for the tibialis posterior muscle. It also provides attachment sites for the dorsal and plantar metatarsal ligaments and the dorsal and plantar tarsometatarsal ligaments.
