The body (shaft) is the short, thin, tubular part of the middle (intermediate) phalanx of the middle finger. It is located between its head and base, gradually tapers in the distal direction, and consists of a flat palmar surface, and a smooth, convex dorsal surface.
The body of a middle phalanx of the middle finger provides an insertion site for the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle, and attachment sites for the fibrous sheaths of the digits of hand.
