Description

The bones of the free part of the lower limb are one of the two groups of bones of the lower limb, the other being the hip bone. They are located inferior to the trunk.

For classification purposes, the bones of the free part of the lower limb can be arbitrarily divided into two groups:

- bones of the thigh and leg;

- bones of the foot.

Because the free part of the lower limb does not articulate directly with the axial skeleton, it's more mobile than the hip bone. It articulates with the hip bone at the hip joint, a joint formed between the femur and the hip bone.
