Description

The calcaneal tuberosity (posterior process of calcaneus) is the large, rounded, posterior end of the calcaneus. It forms the heel, contains medial and lateral processes, and provides:

—origin sites for the abductor hallucis, abductor digiti minimi, flexor digitorum brevis and quadratus plantae muscles;

—insertion sites for the gastrocnemius, soleus, and plantaris muscles, all via the calcaneal tendon;

—attachment sites for the plantar aponeurosis, long plantar ligament and the flexor retinaculum of foot.
