Description
The gluteal surface of ilium is the large, rough, and curved outer aspect of the ilium.
It is one of the three surfaces of the ilium, the other two being the sacropelvic surface and iliac fossa, and is an area that is bounded:
—anteriorly, by the anterior border of ilium;
—posteriorly, by the posterior border of ilium;
—superiorly, by the iliac crest;
—anteroinferiorly by the acetabulum.
Its posteroinferior end is continuous with the dorsal surface of body of ischium.
The gluteal surface of ilium contains anterior, posterior and inferior gluteal lines, which divide the gluteal surface into four regions:
—The region between the acetabulum and inferior gluteal line provides an origin site for the rectus femoris muscle.
—The region between the inferior and anterior gluteal lines provides an origin site for the gluteus minimus muscle.
—The region between the anterior and posterior gluteal lines provides an origin site for the gluteus medius muscle.
—The region behind the posterior gluteal line provides an origin site for the gluteus maximus muscle, and an attachment site for the sacrotuberous ligament.
