Description

The greater sciatic (ischiatic or ischiadic) notch is the larger of the two indentations found along the posterior border of the coxal bone. From the ischial spine, it extends superiorly along the posterior border of the body of ischium and then along the posterior border of ilium, before ending at the posterior inferior iliac spine.

The greater sciatic notch is wider in females than males and is converted into the greater sciatic foramen by the sacrotuberous and sacrospinous ligaments. This foramen allows for the passage of the piriformis muscle, sciatic nerve and other nerves and vessels of the lower limb.
