Description

The greater trochanter is the large, blunt, quadrilateral eminence on the proximal end of the femur. It projects superiorly from the superior aspect of the junction between the neck and body of femur.

The greater trochanter consists of the trochanteric fossa, provides an origin site for the vastus lateralis muscle, and provides insertion sites for the:

—gluteus minimus muscle, which inserts onto its anterior aspect;

—obturator internus and gemelli muscles, which insert onto its medial aspect;

—gluteus medius, muscle which inserts onto its lateral aspect;

—piriformis muscle, which inserts onto its superior aspect.
