The head of first metatarsal bone is the expanded, rounded, distal end of the bone. It is the distal continuation of its body and contains a distal articular facet and the grooves for sesamoid bones.

The head of first metatarsal bone provides attachment sites for the collateral, accessory collateral and plantar ligaments of the first metatarsophalangeal joint.
