The head is the expanded, pulley-shaped, distal end of the middle phalanx of fourth toe. It is the distal continuation of its body and contains a distal articular facet, which articulates with the articular facet of the distal phalanx of fourth toe, forming the distal interphalangeal joint of the fourth toe.
The head of middle phalanx of fourth toe provides attachment sites for the collateral, accessory collateral and plantar ligaments of the distal interphalangeal joint of the fourth toe.
