Description
The head is the expanded, pulley-shaped, distal end of the middle (intermediate) phalanx of the index finger. It is the distal continuation of its body and contains a distal articular facet, which articulates with the articular facet of the distal phalanx of the index finger, forming the distal interphalangeal joint of the index finger.
The head of the middle phalanx of the index finger provides attachment sites for the collateral, accessory collateral, and palmar ligaments of the distal interphalangeal joint of the index finger.
