Description

The head is the expanded, pulley-shaped, distal end of the proximal phalanx of great toe (hallux or first toe). It is the distal continuation of its body and contains a distal articular facet, which articulates with the proximal articular facet of the distal phalanx of great toe, forming the interphalangeal joint of the great toe.

The head of proximal phalanx of great toe provides attachment sites for the collateral, accessory collateral, and plantar ligaments of the interphalangeal joint of the great toe.
