Description

The iliac fossa is the smooth, large, concave area of the inner aspect of the ilium. It is one of the three surfaces of the ilium, the other two being the sacropelvic and gluteal surfaces, and is an area that is bounded:

—anteriorly, by the anterior border of ilium;

—posteriorly, by the medial border of ilium;

—superiorly, by the iliac crest.

The iliac fossa is continuous anteroinferiorly with the pectineal surface of superior pubic ramus and provides an origin site for the iliacus muscle.
