Description

The infraspinous fossa is the lower, slightly concave area on the dorsal surface of the scapula. It is located inferior to the spine of the scapula and is the larger of the two fossae found on the dorsal surface, the other being the supraspinous fossa.

The infraspinous fossa occupies almost two thirds of the dorsal surface of the scapula and is bounded:

—medially, by the lower portion of the medial border of scapula;

—laterally, by the lateral border of scapula;

—superiorly, by the spine of scapula;

—inferiorly, by the inferior angle of scapula.

It contains the nutrient foramen of the scapula and provides the origin site for the infraspinatus muscle.
