Description

The intercondylar fossa (intercondylar notch or intercondyloid fossa) of femur is the depression found along the posteroinferior aspect of the distal end of the femur. It is located between the medial and lateral condyles of femur and is bounded:

—anteriorly, by the patellar surface of femur;

—posteriorly, by the intercondylar line.

Its lateral wall is formed by the medial aspect of the lateral condyle of femur, and this provides an attachment site for the anterior cruciate ligament. Its medial wall is formed by the lateral aspect of the medial condyle of femur, and this provides an attachment site for the posterior cruciate ligament.
