Description

The lateral surface of femur is the area on the posterolateral aspect of the body of femur. It is one of the five surfaces of the body of femur, the other four being the anterior, medial, posterior, and popliteal surfaces. It is an area that is bounded:

—anteriorly, by the lateral border of femur;

—posteriorly, by the linea aspera;

—posterosuperiorly, by the gluteal tuberosity;

—posteroinferiorly, by the lateral supracondylar ridge.

The superior end of the lateral surface of femur is continuous with the greater trochanter, and inferior end is continuous with the lateral condyle of femur. It provides an origin site for the vastus intermedius muscle.
