Description

The lesser sciatic (ischiatic or ischiadic) notch is the smaller of the two indentations found along the posterior border of the coxal bone. From the ischial spine, it extends inferiorly along the posterior border of the body of ischium, to the upper margin of the ischial tuberosity.

The lesser sciatic notch is converted into the lesser sciatic foramen by the sacrotuberous and sacrospinous ligaments. This foramen allows for the passage of the tendon of the obturator internus muscle, the internal pudendal vessels and the pudendal nerve.
