Description

The linea aspera is the rough, broad ridge that travels down along the posterior aspect of the body of femur. It consists of medial and lateral lips, with an intermediate zone located between. It ends:

—superiorly, by dividing into the spiral line, gluteal tuberosity, and pectineal line of femur;

—inferiorly, by dividing into the medial and lateral supracondylar lines.

The linea aspera provides:

—origin sites for the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and short head of biceps femoris muscles;

—insertion sites for the adductor brevis, longus, and magnus muscles;

—attachment sites for both the medial and lateral femoral intermuscular septa.
