Description
The outer (external) lip of iliac crest is the external edge of the ventral region of the iliac crest. It is one of two lips of the iliac crest, the other being the inner lip, both of which surround the intermediate zone of iliac crest. The prominent iliac tubercle is located along the outer lip, 5–6 cm posterior to the anterior superior iliac spine.
The outer lip of iliac crest provides origin sites for the latissimus dorsi and tensor fasciae latae muscles, and an insertion site for the external abdominal oblique muscle. It also provides an attachment site for the fascia lata.
