Description

The patellar surface of femur is the groove-like area on the anterior aspect of the distal end of femur. It is located between the articular facets of the medial and lateral condyles of the femur.

The patellar surface of femur articulates with the vertical ridge of patella, contributing to the formation of the patellofemoral joint, and accommodates the gliding of the patella over the distal end of the femur during flexion and extension of the knee joint. Overall, the patellofemoral joint, medial femorotibial joint and lateral femorotibial joint collectively form the knee joint.
