Description

The plantar (inferior) surface is the rough, concave area on the lower aspect of the calcaneus. It is one of the six surfaces of the calcaneus, the other five being the posterior, dorsal, medial and lateral surfaces, and the cuboid articular surface.

The plantar surface of calcaneus contains the calcaneal tubercle and the medial and lateral processes of calcaneal tuberosity. It provides origin sites for the abductor hallucis, abductor digiti minimi, flexor digitorum brevis and quadratus plantae muscles. It also provides attachment sites for the plantar aponeurosis and the plantar calcaneocuboid and long plantar ligaments.
