Description

The popliteal surface of femur is the smooth, triangular area on the posteroinferior aspect of the body of femur. It is one of the five surfaces of the body of femur, the other four being the anterior, lateral, medial, and posterior surfaces. It is an area that is bounded:

—medially, by the medial supracondylar ridge;

—laterally, by the lateral supracondylar ridge;

—inferiorly, by the intercondylar line.

The popliteal surface of femur contributes to the formation of the floor of the popliteal fossa and provides an origin site for the medial head of gastrocnemius muscle.
