Description

The posterior border of ilium is the posteriorly located margin of the bone. It extends from the posterior superior iliac spine to the upper end of the posterior border of body of ischium. It is one of the three borders of the ilium, the other two being the anterior and medial borders, and it separates the gluteal and sacropelvic surfaces of ilium. It begins inferior to the posterior superior iliac spine, where it forms a small notch, followed by a blunt process, known as the posterior superior iliac spine. It then continues inferiorly to form the upper end of the greater sciatic notch, while the lower end of the notch is formed by the posterior border of body of ischium.

The posterior border of ilium provides an attachment site for the sacrotuberous ligament.
