Description

The posterior intercondylar area (posterior intercondylar fossa or posterior intercondyloid fossa) is the posteriorly located, non-articular part of the region that is found between the articular facets of the medial and lateral condyles of the tibia. It is separated from the anterior intercondylar area by the intercondylar eminence.

The posterior intercondylar area provides attachment sites for the posterior cruciate ligament and the posterior horns of both the medial and lateral menisci.
