Description

The posterior surface is the smooth area on the posteromedial aspect of the body of pubis. It is one of the three surfaces of the body of pubis, the other two being the anterior and symphyseal surfaces, and it is an area that is bounded:

—superiorly, by the crest of pubis;

—anteromedially, by the symphyseal surface of body of pubis.

Its inferior end is continuous with the internal surface of inferior pubic ramus, and its posterolateral end is continuous with the pelvic surface of superior pubic ramus.

The posterior surface of body of pubis provides origin sites for the levator ani and obturator internus muscles, as well as an attachment site for the puboprostatic ligament in males. It lies immediately anterior to the urinary bladder.
