Description

The posterior surface of femur is the area on the posterosuperior aspect of the body of femur. It is one of the five surfaces of the body of femur, the other four being the anterior, lateral, medial, and popliteal surfaces. It is an area that is bounded:

—medially, by the spiral line;

—laterally, by the gluteal tuberosity;

—superiorly, by the intertrochanteric crest.

The superomedial end of the posterior surface of femur is continuous with the lesser trochanter, and its superolateral end is continuous with the greater trochanter. It consists of the pectineal line of femur and provides insertion sites for the adductor brevis and pectineus muscles.
