Description
The posterior (flexor) surface of fibula is the area found along the posteromedial aspect of the bone. It is one of the three surfaces of fibula, the other two being the medial and lateral surfaces, and is an area that is bounded:
—medially, by the interosseous border of fibula;
—laterally, by the posterior border of fibula.
The posterior surface of fibula contains the medial crest and nutrient foramen of fibula. Its distal end articulates with the fibular notch of the tibia, forming the inferior tibiofibular joint. It provides origin sites for the tibialis posterior, soleus and flexor hallucis longus muscles. Because these muscles originate from this posterior surface, it is therefore also known as the flexor surface of the fibula.
