Description

The proximal part (end) of tibia is the largely broader, superior portion of the bone. It is continuous inferiorly with the body of tibia and contains the:

—medial and lateral condyles;

—anterior and posterior intercondylar areas;

—intercondylar eminence;

—tibial tuberosity;

—tubercle of iliotibial tract.

Its superior surface is somewhat flat, known as the tibial plateau, and this articulates with the condyles of the femur, contributing to the formation of the knee joint.

The proximal part of tibia also contains the fibular articular facet, which articulates with the head of fibula, forming the superior tibiofibular joint.
