Description

The supraspinous fossa is the upper, deeply concave area on the dorsal surface of the scapula. It is located superior to the spine of the scapula and is the smaller of the two fossae found on the dorsal surface, the other being the infraspinous fossa.

The supraspinous fossa occupies almost one third of the dorsal surface of the scapula and is bounded: —medially, by the upper portion of the medial border of scapula;

—laterally, by the coracoid process;

—superiorly, by the superior angle of scapula, superior border of scapula, and superior scapular notch;

—inferiorly, by the spine of scapula.

It provides an origin site for the supraspinatus muscle.
